The Thundra-Crannog War is a war that took place between January 6th and 12th 2025 troops of the Second Thundran Republic invaded the Lordship of Crannoghold. Thundran troops initially crossed the border with the Lordship by taking Westmooreland and its mountain, shortly afterwards Thundran forces pushed into Crannog City, the majority of the fighting took place within Crannog City. The battle for the city ended with the fall of Fort Crannog. After the battle Thundra announced the creation of the Republic of Crannoghold, paving the way for the eventual integration of Crannoghold into Thundra.
Background
During the November 24 Thundran election incumbent Thundrarch Aleksy Zerzan had made several promises to the citizens of Thundra that he would lead and win an invasion of their eastern neighbor Crannoghold in order to establish Thundra as a real great power. Due to weak domestic opposition and the success of his first term in office, Zerzan won the election with a 7/0 landslide vote, using this newfound vote of confidence in his rulership Zerzan immediately instructed his cabinet and military forces to prepare for a military operation to occupy Crannoghold. Whilst Thundra's military was preparing for the invasion, the Thundrarch announced they would go on a global diplomatic mission to speak to as many great powers as possible. These talks were meant to get a better overview of international support for Crannoghold and its government.
Having prepared for a war with Crannoghold and being aware that neither the Holy Pyrannic Empire nor Ritannia would intervene, Thundrarch Aleksy Zerzan made the following declaration on January 6th 2025:
"Owing to the history of the Lordship, the Second Thundran Republic is left with no choice but to announce the start of a special military excursion into the Lordship of Crannoghold to install a government which will actually keep the peace, which will refrain from causing international incidents, and which will actually commit to the promises it makes to its neighbours and allies.
Crannoghold has under its current ruling dynasty has broken the promises it makes to its allies time and time again, it has caused for the global North more trouble than any other state since the end of the Revolutionist scourge that has scarred our continent, and it has proven itself to be an agent of Chaos on the global stage.
The government which we aim to install will be one which will respect the religious tradition of Crannoghold, it will be a voice of reason and stability globally, and it will rule Crannoghold for the betterment of the people of Crannoghold. The citizens of Crannoghold will not be evicted, deported, or put in detainment facilities, they will be allowed to continue their lives as free citizens under a government which, unlike the Lordship, does not seek to use them as cannon fodder."
This declaration was met with a response from the Lordship of Crannoghold, which was published the day after:
"For a Southerner you do show some northern qualities, but yet you have the spine of a Southerner, one I can assure will be broken, be it a swift fall or the slow, repetitive pressure of the resolve of the Crannogmen and their fury at this cowardly assault on our independence and sovereignty. As a nation and as a people, Crannoghold can give you the definite assurance that your Armies may march in, but by Pyr they will die in Crannoghold. We will show quarter to Thundra for now, and we will abide by all rules of war, but I can only guarantee that if you partake in this war as a gentleman and proper soldier. But know this; Until Victory or Death, we stand defiant"
Battle of Westermoorland
The first fighting of the war was the battle of Westermoorland, Thundran forces set off from the Thundran border and reached Mont Thuraz Heights by the 12th of January. Though Westermoorland is not in itself valuable, it provided the armies of Thundra with an easy entrance into Crannog City. Aleksy Zerzan was the first to set foot on the hill in an attempt to seize the highly strategic plateau which forms the top of the hill. Though the push up the hill was uncontested, a number of hidden explosive devices went off behind the Thundran army whilst it took Mont Thuraz Heights. Shortly afterwards a lone Crannog skirmisher was spotted running behind the Thundran lines. He was quickly intercepted and liquidated. Thundra did not suffer any casualties during this battle, whilst Crannoghold only lost one skirmisher.
Battle for the City of Crannoghold
Later that same day Thundran forces reached the City of Crannoghold, the capital of the Lordship of Crannoghold and entered the city from the north western side, once again Zerzan was the first of Thundra to enter the city. Over the course of the day more and more of Crannog City fell to advancing Thundran forces. It was during the fighting in the city that the only Thundran casualty fell, most casualties which fell that day fell on the Crannog side. Near the end of the battle the defenders had been pushed out to Fort Flokk McDuill to the south of the city. A Thundran soldier named MagnusTwo distinguished himself on the battlefield by taking down a number of strong fighters on the defending side. Eventually Lord McDuill called for the retreat of his units but it was to no avail. Command and discipline had collapsed on the Crannog side, which led to the Thundrans being capable of pillaging a number of the supplies in the Fort. Tortugan soldiers aligned to Thundra also stole a number of artifacts from the Red Abbey of Crannoghold.
Guerilla warfare and the Republic of Crannoghold
After the battle, McDuill and what remained of Crannoghold's military had managed to retreat around the City of Crannoghold into the north of Crannoghold where they started to engage in guerilla warfare, Thundra and its military in the mean time concentrated their efforts on the creation of the Republic of Crannoghold, a puppet state led by MagnusTwo. The Republic controlled Westermoorland and the City of Crannoghold, whilst the Lordship controlled the rest of the country. This state of affairs remained pretty stagnant until the annexation of the Republic of Crannoghold into the Second Thundran Republic on the 28th of January 2025.
