Iskander Valerai is a Valerosian nobleman and statesman, serving as the Lord and Founding Architect of the Lordship of Valerose, a chartered state within the Holy Laiannic Empire. Known for his reserved and deliberate leadership style, Valerai oversaw the establishment of Valerose from largely undeveloped land and continues to govern the state under the imperial constitutional framework. Though historically reclusive, he has expressed an intention to adopt a more public role in the governance of his lordship.
Early Life and Family
Iskander Valerai was born in the City of Laia to Alexander Valerai, a wealthy merchant whose commercial influence extended across much of the south. The Valerai family traces its ancestral origins to Yimirgola, a land destroyed within recent generations, resulting in the family’s displacement and eventual settlement in Laia.
Although Iskander never lived in Yimirgola, its loss formed a significant part of his upbringing through family accounts and preserved traditions. This inherited sense of impermanence would later influence his desire to establish a lasting and orderly state of his own.
Founding of Valerose
In his mid-twenties, Valerai utilised inherited wealth and secured imperial approval to acquire a largely undeveloped island territory in the north-eastern reaches of the empire. Rather than establishing immediate dominion, he pursued gradual settlement, overseeing the planning and construction of the town of Valerose along the slopes of the island’s central mountain.
This process culminated in the formal recognition of the territory as the Lordship of Valerose, with Valerai granted authority through an imperial charter.
Personality
Valerai is widely regarded as reserved and difficult to read. His measured speech and guarded demeanour often lead to first impressions of suspicion or emotional distance, though those who know him describe him as quietly loyal and deeply committed to the long-term wellbeing of Valerose.
Privately, he is known to value solitude, ritual, and controlled routine, reflecting his broader philosophy of governance.
