The Lordship of Valerose is a chartered state of the Holy Laiannic Empire, located in the north-eastern region of the empire. Comprising primarily an island territory dominated by a central mountain, the state is defined by the town of Valerose, which is built along the mountain’s slopes. Governed by Iskander Valerai, Lord and Founding Architect of Valerose, the lordship functions as an autonomous imperial state under the authority of the imperial constitution.
Geography
Valerose occupies a largely insular landmass, characterised by steep terrain and a prominent central mountain that shapes both settlement and governance. The town of Valerose is constructed along the mountain’s side, with elevated districts overlooking the surrounding rivers. This geography has contributed to the state’s relative isolation, as well as its emphasis on order, careful planning, and controlled expansion.
Government
Valerose is governed as a chartered autonomous state within the Holy Laiannic Empire. Ultimate sovereignty rests with the imperial crown, while local authority is exercised by the Lord of Valerose in accordance with imperial law.
The Lordship is ruled by Iskander Valerai, whose authority derives from an imperial charter formally recognising Valerose as a constituent state of the empire. Governance is marked by a restrained and deliberate style, prioritising stability, legality, and continuity over spectacle or rapid reform.
History
Founding
The land that would become Valerose was largely undeveloped prior to its acquisition in the early adult years of Iskander Valerai. Drawing upon inherited wealth from his family’s mercantile background and acting with imperial approval, Valerai secured the territory and oversaw its gradual development into a permanent settlement. Rather than a sudden founding, Valerose emerged incrementally through planned construction and administrative organisation.
Development
Over time, Valerose grew into a recognised imperial state, its strategic location and controlled growth contributing to its stability. The lordship’s development reflected its founder’s preference for permanence and structure, shaped by the historical loss of his family’s ancestral homeland.
Society and Culture
The people of Valerose, known as Valerosians, live within a society that values order, routine, and continuity. The symbolic use of the rose is prominent in local customs and ceremonial displays, reflecting both the state’s identity and its ruling house. Public life is comparatively subdued, shaped by the lordship’s insular geography and restrained governance.
Relations with the Empire
Valerose maintains a stable relationship with the imperial crown and is formally aligned with the authority of Emperor Junk Zabel I. The lordship has no declared external enemies, favouring political neutrality and internal consolidation over expansionist ambition.
